SERVICE AND COMMITMENT TO KINGSBOROUGH HOUSES: ALL SERVICE BEGINS AT HOME
I have been a proud resident of Kingsborough Houses since January 2007 and I’ve made a daily commitment to CHANGING THE NARRATIVE on how society views people living in public housing. I achieved 4 college degrees from the City University of New York. This year, I will become Dr. Jamell Henderson, a 5-time CUNY Graduate proudly representing my development wherever I go. Let’s look at some of the work I’ve led or been a part of:
- Organized the NYCHA BLACK March and Rally–July 2020 with NYCC and the Brooklyn Chapter of Black Lives Matter (BLM)
- Spoke on behalf of the residents at the NYCHA Rally for Funding led by Sen. Chuck Schumer and Councilmember Alicka Ampry Samuel
- Organized Meet and Greet with Sen. Jabari Brisport which became a working and productive relationship
- Organized Tenants to attend the Public Housing Lobby Day in Albany
- Organized tenants to connect with the 77th PCT Community Council President, Comptroller Office, and Brooklyn Borough President’s Office
- Spoke at a Congressional Hearing in DC to advocate for climate change improvements that are needed in public housing
- Help establish a working and productive relationship with NYS Assemblywoman Stefani Zinnerman
- Stopped a major housing development from coming to Kingsborough to bring awareness and increase tenant participation and input
- Assisted the TA Leadership in the push for infrastructure improvements to the development by being at the table to advocate for upgrades, welcoming community and agency leaders to come and speak to the tenants and hear the direct experiences
- New speed bumps

- Upgraded signs to deter general traffic
- Organized the meet and greet with the 2022 candidates for Governor and Lt. Governor, Jumaane Williams and Ana Maria-Archilla

- 2002 Youth of the year-Bridge Street AWME Church
- 2004 Young Adult of the Year-Bridge Street AWME Church
- Delivered the Word of God at Bridge St AWME Church 4 times
- Became 1st Episcopal District Young People’s Department (YPD) President–2008 to 2012
- Delivered the Word of God at over 50 AME Churches
- Facilitated the Power of Your Vote workshop in Indianapolis under the late Bishop Dr. E. Henning-Byfield
- Received the 1st Episcopal District YPD Presidents Award
- Recipient, Letter of Accomplishment, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg

- Introduced the Resolution to condemn the killings of Trayvon Martin and Ramarley Graham, to which a student-led resolution passed unanimously in the Academic Senate and College Council
